Summary
TVB Associates is assembling a team of experienced neutron beam instrument scientists and engineers to support bids for scientific and technical design services across multiple instrumentation projects.
Opportunities may include:
- Design of time-of-flight (TOF) SANS and neutron imaging instruments for a pulsed compact accelerator-driven neutron source
- Contributions to neutron optics upgrades for a reactor-based SANS beamline
- Design of a neutron imaging beamline at a reactor source
- Development of SANS concepts that may incorporate a cold neutron source
These are opportunities to contribute scientific insight to instrument development projects and if applicable, mentor younger instrument scientists and engineers —while maintaining flexibility and existing professional commitments.
These are part-time, project-based consulting roles, and may be suitable for recently retired experts who want to stay engaged without taking on a full-time position.
Scope of Work
Depending on project needs, team members may contribute to one or more of the following:
- Design of SANS wavelength bandwidth, resolution, and Q-range, and defining collimation and guide systems, pulse structure and choppers, other neutron optical components, shielding, detectors and data acquisition systems
- Cold neutron source integration to enhance instrument performance
- Design of imaging and tomography beamlines, defining spatial resolution, flux, and wavelength capabilities, and supporting energy-resolved or time-resolved imaging approaches
What You’ll Do
Depending on project needs, you may:
- Provide scientific and technical leadership in instrument design
- Translate user needs into specifications
- Conduct performance modelling and advise on trade-offs of design choices
- Write or contribute to conceptual and technical design reports
- Interact with instrument technical advisory committee to gather technical reviews and input
- Advise on fabrication and integration of components into a final, commissioned instrument
- Mentor junior contributors to instrument development projects
Who You Are
- A recognized expert in neutron instrumentation, especially in SANS or imaging
- Mid- to senior-career or retired yet scientifically active
- Interested in part-time, high-impact consulting work
Why Work With TVB Associates
- Flexible, part-time consulting roles that can fit alongside your current position or retirement
- Opportunity to shape future instruments and upgrades
- Opportunities to mentor the next generation of neutron instrument scientists and engineers
- Collaboration with other experts on the team
